Is a rental car the best option to get to my hotel from the port? What are the alternatives?
There are also the following options: A local bus . A few taxis . Some mini vans that offer transfers. The problem with these options is that the local bus which is cheap, goes only to Fira and gets full really fast. Taxis are almost impossible to get, and the mini vans charge a small fortune with unfortunately often questionable quality of service. If for some reason you prefer not to drive, make sure that you have a reservation for your transportation before you arrive. Looking for a transportation after your boat arrives, when the port is full with hundreds of people is a very bad idea.

What happens if i decide to get a car last minute at Santorini Port?
It is definitely much better to book your rental car in advance. Availability at Santorini Port is always limited due to the small parking areas, making it impossible to have a lot of cars available for last minute requests. If you are already on a ferry on the way to Santorini, we have the possibility to accept bookings even for the same day, as long as we receive your booking at least 2 hours before arrival.

How easy is it to drive the road up from the Port? I have read its quite steep.
That is true. To get from the port (sea level) , to the top of the cliff and the main road, its a bit steep. Another thing you need to know is that the road from the port can be really busy. That means that you will probably need to stop and start several times before reaching the top. The road though is in a very good condition, and very safe. So despite the traffic its easy to drive up from the port as long as you keep in mind the following tip. Rent a car with a familiar transmission!. If you usually drive automatic then you should rent an automatic. Driving a manual car all the way to the top, is only possible for drivers that drive a manual car very often. Driving a manual uphills from the port is not recommended for
people that usually drive automatic.

How do i find you at the port?

Are there any other ports in Santorini? My ticket says to THIRA not to Athinios!! How do i know where i arrive?
Santorini new Port or Santorini Athinios Port or simply Santorini Port is the only port where ferries or speed boats from other islands and the mainland arrive. There is also the port of Fira or old port, but is used only by cruise passengers and is not accessible by car. If you travel by Blue Star Ferries, Sea Jets, Minoan lines, Anek lines, Saos ferries, Zande Ferries etc you arrive at Athinios Port. If you are coming from any island like Naxos, Mykonos, Ios, Paros , Amorgos etc or from Piraeus the port of Athens, you ALWAYS arrive at Athinios Port.
Thira is the official name of Santorini, and that is why its mentioned like this in your tickets. Don't get alarmed. Athinios is where ALL THE BOATS come to.

Are there any restaurants at the port?
Yes there are plenty of "port type" cafes and restaurants . You can enjoy a coffee or snack while waiting for your boat.

Where can we wait for our boat after we deliver our car? Are there any public facilities?
There are air conditioned public waiting areas where you can relax until its time to embark on your boat, and there are also public toilets or you can wait in one of the various cafes and restaurants located at the port

How to reach Santorini Port

By a Rental Car

A Rental Car is one of the best ways to reach Santorini Port. It is important to start from your hotel about 90 minutes before your boat's departure. This way you will not be stressed or drive in a harry even if the road is very busy. Some times it takes more than expected to get to the port. Even though distances are very short, traffic some times is really heavy.

By Bus

You can only get a bus to the port from Fira. There is not a connection to the port with any other village. From Fira there are departures at 09:00, 11:00 and 14:00. Buses are usually crowded, and not suitable for families with young children or senior travelers. If you take a public bus your luggage will go to the luggage department of the bus, so nothing fragile should be there. The ticket to the port costs 2,5 euro per person and the luggage is free.

By Taxi or a private transfer

Taxis and mini vans providing private transfers are a very common solution to get to the port. This service is usually booked either online, or from the clients hotel reception or host. Depending on the departure time and the clients location, the cost for 1-4 people could be from 45 to 75 euro ( including the luggage). The cost will increase significantly if there are more than 4 people in the car ( as a bigger car will be required. It's always a good idea to book at least a day ahead.

There are a few restaurants, and coffee shops as well as a couple of mini markets. In Santorini port there is also an a/c waiting area protecting you from the sun as you are waiting for your ferry.

Parking

There are limited parking places at the port. If you are returning one of our cars we provide directions on where to return your rental car, and we have people waiting to collect it, making things much easier. The suggested area to return your car is the sign posted parking lot on the right side of the port entrance. Its very easy to find as the port is quite small. If you are planning to leave your car at the port for a few hours while having a boat tour, or a few days if you are having a visit to a nearby island, you need to get permission and a suggested spot from the port authority

Terminal Facilities

Ferry Terminal facilities include an air conditioned waiting room, Pay-phone, Hot & Cold Drinks Vending Machines and toilets. In general facilities are clean and adequate and many visitors find shelter from the Greek sun in the terminal.

Accommodation

If you are thinking of spending some hours during the night at the port, you should be prepared to use only the public facilities. ( Waiting area ) There are not any type of rooms at the port area. The shops and restaurants are usually closed in the night. The air conditioned waiting area and the toilets though are always open.
